What non-serious people ask me the most...

Q: What do I do to lose weight?
(Serious People ask me something else, but that's another blog)

I get this question asked so much, that I decided to write about it...

  • I don't start off by giving them a diet.
  • I don't tell them what to eat.
  • I don't tell them what time of the day to exercise.
  • I don't tell them what foods to avoid.
  • I don't tell them what shakes to drink or supplements to buy.

Although everything I just mentioned is critical for any weight loss and or muscle-building program, most people aren't ready to absorb so much information.

So what do I do to answer their question?

"I keep it simple and make them aware".

1.) I simply have them adjust what they are currently eating for the first month.

Here are some examples of what they can adjust...

  • If they eat half a pizza every Friday, start with having only 1 to 2 slices.
  • If they like to have dessert like cake or ice cream after dinner, replace it with fruit.
  • If they have 3 spoons of sugar in their coffee, have 2 instead.
  • If they like to drink sugar water or cokes daily, then go one day without it or every other day to start.
  • If they like 2 slices of bread or tortillas with their breakfast, have only 1.
  • ​Replace dessert w/ fruit instead
  • Switch whole milk to 2%, then to skim milk after a month.
  • Instead of a 12-pack of beer on Saturday, taper to 6, then 3, then 2 by the 4th week.

2.) I ask them how they are managing their stress

This question will open them up on many levels and is important to make them aware that stress needs to be properly managed to help them to lose weight.

  • They become aware of what is causing their stress... is it work, at home or the something deeper.
  • What are they doing to manage it, if at all.  They may not be doing anything about it, crying or drinking themselves to sleep.
  • Suggestions are made to help manage their stress and if they need more help counseling or life coaching it should be considered.
  • Offer healthy avenues and activites to perform to help manage stress, instead of going on a drinking binge or eating yourself out of stress.

3.) Tell them to Get Active 15min a day.

Some may want to do more than 15 min, but showing them that 15min can make a difference can help motivate them to do more than the minimum.

  • Getting active doesnt have to be difficult and you dont have to spend hours in a gym, start walking 15min a day.  We spend hours on our phones, social media and watching television, so 15 min being active is nothing in comparison.
  • Being active 15min a day is great for relieving stress.
  • Meditate while you walk - just like prayer, meditation can clear your mind and your ability to process issues on a different level. It helps simplify the problems going on in your life and prioritizing your day becomes easier.
  • The activity will help you relieve stress and release the feel good hormones such as endorphines. 

See where I am going with this now?  Im not offering a meal plan and a workout regimen off the bat. I am providing practical advise to lead them in the right direction to help themselves achive their goals.  This is so much more than diet and exercise. 

My answer helps raise awareness on the indiviuals current situation that guides them to make better decisions for better health and they answer their own question.

Once this person becomes aware, they make these changes and are ready for the next level... getting in the best shape of their life.
