6 Things to Consider before Choosing a Personal Trainer

Looking for a Personal Trainer that can help you achieve what you’re looking for?

Nowadays with Instagram models and athletes half-dressed on social media it can be difficult finding the right person to help you reach your goals.  It may even be deceiving at times, but no need to fear.  Below are 6 things to consider before choosing a personal trainer.  This will clear the fog and help you focus what really matters and that’s crushing your goals with the right coach!

  1. Credentials – Is the trainer certified and in what areas?  Find it on their business card, business website, their social media wall or you can ask!  These credentials ensure the trainer is knowledgeable to teach you the right exercises using proper form, reduce your risk of injury when performing advanced movements and help you achieve your goals in reasonable time.  Are you training in a Group, 1-on-1 or in Mixed Martial Arts?  Then look for those credentials.  Some trainers may have additional specialty training by reputable bodybuilding gurus such as Dave Pulumbo and that’s always a plus!   All Personal Trainers should be certified, don’t forget.
  2. Experience – This is so important on so many levels because experience counts!  You are investing time, money and effort into your health, that you don’t need to be someone’s experiment.  Does your trainer have experience working with specific medical conditions, weight loss goals, children or has experienced managing chronic diseases such as diabetes?  What type of clients do they train or have they help someone lose over 100lbs?  Having a personal trainer with great experience will know how to manages issues that arise during your journey and will know how and when to make the right adjustments.
  3. Personality – Getting along with your trainer always makes things so much more fun!  Does this trainer provide positive reinforcement, does he challenge you, push your limits or are they more empathetic?  If personality is important for you, ensure to ask the right questions listed.  You can also find out really fast the type of person you’ll be working on your first meet.  There are no second chances for a first impression.
  4. Philosophy – Every trainer has a training philosophy & you should find out what that is.  How does your trainer develop his programs, how soon can you see results and what methods are used to achieve the client’s goals?  Some trainers have so much in their arsenal that the benefits for you are endless.  Ask what it is and see if this makes sense for you and your goal.
  5. Cost – Just as credentials, experience, location and training philosophy vary, so will the cost.  Sit down and calculate what your budget will be and if there is flexibility to invest more.  If there is something you really like about your personal trainer that could benefit you and you’re willing to make the investment, don’t hesitate.
  6. Reputation – Does your potential trainer have any google reviews? Take a look at their google business page and see what people are saying.  Their business page can also be found on google maps.

A great personal trainer will select the right program to fit you.  If something doesn’t feel right, let them know to ensure a safe and comfortable experience while achieving optimal results.
